Technology park for waste management - SITA AGORA

On the site of the former Metaleurop Nord metallurgical plant that SITA AGORA dismantled and decontaminated from 2004 to 2006, the company, a subsidiary of SITA Nord, is continuing to develop a multimodal environmental technology park for waste management that is unique in France.

The history of the site, not to mention its successful conversion, as well as the variety and complementarity of the companies developing on it, and its market positioning in terms of multimodal logistics services, together make the environmental technology park a highly attractive industrial area in the heart of the Nord region of France.

On the environmental technology park, SITA Nord is developing innovative and effective solutions, in terms of material recovery and energy from waste from the corporate sector, local authorities and domestic uses under optimal environmental conditions, meeting the objectives of the Grenelle Environment Summit in particular.

At the industrial level, the site offers:

    • The deconstruction of End-of-Life Vehicles: RE-SOURCE AUTO PIECES uses novel deconstruction methods to ensure recovery rates in line with the European Directive of 85% in 2009 and 95% in 2015.
    • Cable recycling: RECYCABLES develops innovative technologies by combining various sorting, cutting and grinding methods for electric cables, telecommunication cables, special cables, and those used on demolition sites.
    • Sorting and recycling waste from the corporate sector and local authorities: SITA NORD has a process for sorting and packaging clean, dry mixed waste that can be used to separate and recover more than 9 kinds of paper and cardboard, 3 grades of wood, 20 grades of plastics and 4 different sizes of rubble.
    • Pallet recycling: EPALIA collects, sorts, repairs, stores and recovers wooden pallets from the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region.
    • Remediation of soil and sediment: SITA FD is authorised to receive 120,000 tonnes of soil and sediment contaminated with hydrocarbons from plants, local authorities, and industrial wasteland in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region and the Benelux countries each year. In 2009, the biological treatment of a batch of 12,000 tonnes of contaminated soil enabled its reuse as part of revegetation projects.

SITA AGORA is now seen by the market as:

    • an industry benchmark in terms of SITA Nord know-how and innovations in waste recovery,
    • an integrated part of a network of SITA Nord facilities with river access in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, benefitting from all the environmental and logistics assets created by multimodality
    • a stakeholder committed to a dynamic process of economic, environmental, and social benefit to the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coalfield as a whole.

SITA AGORA facts and figures:

    • 11,000 end-of-life vehicles deconstructed per year
    • 35,000 tonnes of cables processed per year
    • 100,000 tonnes of waste processed per year
    • 250,000 pallets recycled per year
