SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT strives to preserve biodiversity as part of its site management activities and offers solutions to industrial customers and local authorities.

Facilities that respect the natural environment

SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT is committed to an ambitious environmental initiative to protect and restore biodiversity at its sites. To do so, the Group is intensifying its R&D efforts to meet these environmental challenges.

Accordingly, Lyonnaise des Eaux has developed the BioRestore, process for restoring marine biodiversity, in partnership with Ecocean and the General Council of Hérault. Aimed at local authorities and coastal developers, this technology allows fish broodstocks to be regenerated in a marine environment, while increasing the diversity of local species. Furthermore, SITA Région Centre-Est has taken biodiversity into account in the design of its La Grange Certier Non-hazardous Waste Landfill Site (Doubs, France). To limit the risk of contaminated stormwater running into the subterranean gorge at Canton Berçot, the company has installed a continuous water-quality monitoring system before discharge.

Developing partnerships and local action

SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT’s subsidiaries, such as SITA France, Lyonnaise des Eaux and Eurawasser, forge partnerships with institutions and associations that contribute essential expertise in protecting species and habitats.

For example, in 2010, Lyonnaise des Eaux signed the Regional Charter for Biodiversity and Natural Environments. This establishes a common strategy and co-ordinated action plans between the company and the Île-de-France regional council.

For its part, SITA France has taken action for the Year of Biodiversity with its programme “On the biodiversity trail with SITA France”. The aim was to get the general public to discover the biodiversity preservation measures implemented with the Paris Natural History Museum at the company’s non-hazardous landfill sites.

2010 Performance

  • 193 sensitive sites identified by the Group, compared to 278 in 2009
  • 98 voluntary action plans adopted and implemented, compared to 86 in 2009
  • 80% of landfill sites indentified as sensitive at SITA France benefit from an action plan aimed at covering its risk (16 out of 20 sites identified)
