Measuring and reducing the carbon footprint of water treatment plants with www.lifecarbontool.com

SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT subsidiaries Degrémont and Lyonnaise des Eaux have designed the first carbon platform for the water industry with a view to supporting the greenhouse gas reduction strategies of public and private organisations.

Improving Group expertise and becoming the gold standard
Measuring and reducing the carbon footprint of water treatment plants with www.lifecarbontool.com

www.lifecarbontool.com provides accurate data on greenhouse gas emissions generated by the construction and use of plants, particularly in the waste water, drinking water and desalination sectors.

With www.lifecarbontool.com, Degrémont and Lyonnaise des Eaux intend to respond to 3 major issues:

  • Creating a gold standard tool
  • Enhancing SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT’s expertise on climate change, eco-engineering and environmental assessment, notably in connection with work carried out by CIRSEE, the international centre for water and environmental research (Centre International de Recherche Sur l’Eau et l’Environnement)
  • Setting up a community network focusing on carbon issues in the water sector

An innovative and accurate carbon emission assessment engine

The platform features the O2C calculator developed using methodology in keeping with life cycle analysis and ADEME’s Bilan Carbone®. The engine uses a database of emission factors specific to water treatment, which is regularly updated by SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT experts. Finally, the website provides access to information on greenhouse gas emissions, reports and client feedback on concerns relating to carbon.

The platform is very user-friendly and includes numerous functions allowing users to:

  • Create their own profile
  • Put together various scenarios relating to the construction or use of a plant
  • Share results online
  • Summarise and export their results as graphs or tables
  • Consult editorial content relating to greenhouse gas emissions in the water industry
