SITA Centre for Sustainable Waste Management, a UN Regional Centre of Expertise for Education for Sustainable Development
In 2003, the SITA Trust, a funding organisation that supports community and environmental improvement projects in the UK, allocated £1.5 million to the University of Northampton to launch the SITA Centre for Sustainable Waste Management.
In five years, the Centre has made significant accomplishments, such as helping local businesses reduce waste, improve efficiency and tighten resources, saving them £7 million, and training over 500 business people in the East Midlands on environmental and waste issues.
The SITA Centre was also awarded the prestigious title of United Nations Regional Centre of Expertise for Education for Sustainable Development.
Five PhDs and one MPhil were awarded last year to SITA Centre students, and PhD student Shanom Ali attracted national attention for his groundbreaking research into the health implications of fortnightly rubbish collections. Also impressive is the acquisition and cataloguing of the AEA (Atomic Energy Authority) collection of waste management publications, fully incorporated into the University library, which is now the largest of its kind in Britain.
The University of Northampton is dedicated to excellent higher education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels both through taught courses and research. As Northamptonshire's only dedicated higher education institution, it is committed to the transfer of knowledge and technology to the community and seeks to contribute to regional cultural development.
